Margaret “Amie” Kozan

Attorney

Margaret “Amie” Kozan has nearly 30 years of experience as an appellate attorney and litigator. She represents clients in state and federal appellate courts and regularly works as part of litigation teams to develop strategy, preserve issues for potential appeal, and draft substantive motions and memoranda. Her appellate experience includes the following substantive areas: complex commercial litigation, family law, personal injury, insurance, Homeowners’ Association law, Mobile Home Park Owners law, defamation, First Amendment, Chapter 119 (public records), civil rights (including section 1983), criminal, domestic violence injunctions, personal injury, defense of attorneys’ fee awards.

She is highly respected by her peers who have called her a “consummate professional” and “the best.” “No one matches her skills,” lauded one trial practitioner who has worked with Amie in dozens of cases. “I have as much respect for [her] as any attorney or jurist that I have met in over 50 years.”

Amie is former chair of the Orange County Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Committee and has served on Ninth Circuit Grievance Committee and the pro bono committee of the Florida Bar’s Appellate Practice Section. She has been selected as a Florida “Super Lawyer” in appellate practice for 9 years straight, has a peer rating of “AV Preeminent” by Martindale-Hubbell (reflecting the highest level of legal ability and ethical standards), and has twice been selected by the Judicial Nominating Commission for potential appointment to the Fifth District Court of Appeal.

Amie’s legal background includes years representing media companies in news gathering (advice and education), reporter shield laws (defense of subpoenas), defense of defamation and privacy claims, pre-publication review, and access to courtrooms and public records.

Promotion marketing and advertising are other areas of law in which Amie has extensive experience. She has advised media companies, regional department stores, grocery store chains, a national sporting goods company, among others, on regulatory compliance and risk minimization in contest and sweepstakes (including drafting rules), and other wide-ranging advertising and marketing promotions.

For the decade and a half prior to joining Losey, Amie had her own appellate and trial support practice.

Licensed in two states and a graduate of Louisiana State University’s School of Law, Amie finished in the top ten percent of her law school class, served as a Senior Editor of the Louisiana Law Review, and was admitted to the Order of the Coif. Following law school, she served as judicial clerk to United States District Court Judge Frank Polozola in the Middle District of Louisiana. Prior to law school, she worked in journalism and media relations.

She is admitted to practice in the United State Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, the Middle District of Florida, and the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of Louisiana.
